A wide range of paper and paperboard is used in packaging today. The main advantages are lightness, recyclability, low cost, and flexible structure. Approximately 10% of all paper and paperboard consumption is used for packaging. Folding cartons are widely used in the retail packaging of products.Our country is a big mass manufacture industry, but there is a big problem widespread existence which is the productivity doesn't reach or over a market. The method of folding carton production is mostly based on manpower. Not only wastes abundant productivity resource and increases cost, but also influences the economic performance of business enterprise seriously. So it is a critical problem to find a method of automatic packaging which is suitable for different carton styles.The method is based on the research on the folding process and trajectory.This paper analyses the type of folding carton according to applicability for mass product, the folding machinery and working proceduce for tube-type, tray-type and complex-structure carton.The paper and paperboard have some geometric and physical change during the folding process.This process is simulate by PRO/E in order to investigate the best point of force application for typical structure of folding carton. Depending on the stress,strain and displacement analyses the configuration control points. With this method the carton is modelled as a mechanism whose links present carton panels and joints present carton creases.Based on the metamorphic mechanisms, the folding position is presented with a hereditary connectivity matrix. The carton-folding position can be analysed by this hypothetical mechanism and the trajectory can be generated from the carton motion model and from the sequence analysis. Manipulating different sections of a carton is realised by creating a path connection based on configuration control point and geometry guiding points. The paper also presents a simulation of process of folding a complex carton.The models and theories of this paper react on the process of the real production and machinery design.
