With the development of the power system, the traditional electromagnetic transducer has been unable to be used in the current detection of the high voltage. So it need for suitable alternative products. As it uses the optical fiber as transmission medium, and applies the principle of Faraday magneto-optical effect of the magneto-optical materials, the optical current transducer is quite suitable to be used for the current detection. Moreover, because of its low-cost, structural stability and high sensitivity, an increasing number of researchers try to study the optical current transformer. The analysis shows that the problems of the several existing magneto-optical optical current transformer (MOCT) are closely related to the magneto-optical materials. For the problem of the magneto-optical materials, the new type of magneto-optical material called magnetic fluids is studied in detail by this paper.First, this paper introduces the composition and preparation method of magnetic fluid briefly. In accordance with the composition and characteristics of the magnetic fluid preparation, the magnetic fluid is chosen appropriately. The stability, transmittance and magnetic properties of the magnetic fluid and its diluted magnetic fluid are analyzed and measured. The results show that the magnetic fluid is highly diluted stability, has different transmission at the different range of wavelengths and super paramagnetic.On the basic principle of Faraday Effect, the experimental platform is designed which is used to study the magneto-optical effect of the magnetic fluids, and the various experimental device of the experimental platform are introduced. The magnetic field devices called C-type electromagnet is introduced in detail. The C-type electromagnet is designed on the base of simulation of the Ansoft software, and then it is calibrated by the MODEL7010 Tesla magnetic field test.Then, the Faraday magneto-optical properties of the magnetic fluid under the different magnetic field including DC magnetic field and AC magnetic field are studied by this paper emphatically. It focuses on impact of the concentration and the thickness of the magnetic fluids, and the unusual Faraday magneto-optical properties of the magnetic fluids are analyzed and discussed in theory.Finally, for the properties and the reality of the magnetic fluids, it should collect the ferromagnetic ring concentrator sensor head, if the optical current transducer uses the magnetic fluid as the sensing materials. And the Ansoft software is used to study and analyze the distribution of the magnetic field in sensor head.
