Buffeting is an aero elastic phenomenon that is common to high performance aircraft. Severe vertical tail buffeting may reduce fatigue life and restrict capabilities of the aircraft, even endanger the safety of flight. Therefore it is significant to suppress the vertical tail vibration, which may increase fatigue life and safety of the aircraft. In this paper, first, recent researches on the active suppression of vertical tail vibration with piezoelectric smart structure are introduced and the active vibration control platform of one-half scale vertical tail model with piezoelectric materials as sensors and actuators is established. Second, system identification method is employed to model the active vibration control system. Then, two controllers are designed, one is used to suppress the single mode vibration, another is to suppress the narrow-band–frequency vibration. At the same time, orders of the two controllers are reduced and the stability and performance of the order-reduced controllers are analyzed. Finally, the vertical tail piezoelectric active vibration control experiment is finished after the simulation of the control system in SIMULINK. Experiment results show that it is feasible and valid to apply the control theory to the vertical tail active vibration control.
