The GPWS is an alerting system which is used to prevent civil aviation controllable flight into terrain. The warning system's threshold has great impact on the performance.Setting reasonable alarm thresholds is one of the most important issue for the system. The principles of several basic alerting modes and the design peocess of their corresponding alerting curves for The Ground Proximity Warning System were studied; a methodology to develop appropriate alerting thresholds was discussed in this thesis. In this dissertation, it presents a methodology to develop appropriate alerting thresholds based on performance metrics. The performance of the system can be predicted by tradeoff between with and without an alert for different states along the course of an encounter situation. This information can then be used to set appropriate threshold values for the desired alerting logic.A random statistical terrain model and the aircraft's trajectory models with and without an alert were studied in this thesis. In the fifth chapter, taking threshold setting of GPWS model 1 and model 5 for example, through computer simulation in MATLAB environment, the design method was demonstrated success. In order to further study the characteristics of the GPWS, the thesis focuseed on developing the 3D Computer Visualization simulation of GPWS used OpeGL in the VC++6.0 environment.
