AC rudder loop has been used successfully for many UAVs for many years. Aimed at the demand of new type UAVs, signal pretreatment algorithms and control law are redesigned to improve effectively the system's response speed and positioning on the basis of modeling and parameter estimation for AC rudder. Because of its lower accuracy and higher mechanical clearance, it is impossible to solve radically mechanical clearance impact to the control precision on the loop by optimizing controller only. So the control quality couldn't meet the demand of new type UAVs.Brushless DC rudder loop has become the research hotspot for its excellent electrical and mechanical properties in recent years. With the rudder loop control technology development, the main technical guidelines such as the size of the weight, bandwidth, mechanical clearance, efficiency and so on, are obviously superior to the AC rudder loop. From point of view the control system design or the research, it does not have fundamentally difference between AC and Brushless DC rudder loop. However, "brushless" is their common characteristics. Thus some achievements such as the new technology, methods and research results used in AC rudder loop research could be transplanted the design and research of DC rudder loop.Adopted inheritance and development of strategies for the golden rule, integral design for the brushless DC rudder loop has been completed. The hardware platform of rudder controller based on single-chip microcomputer and speed controller was developed. It has many advantages such as small in size, the high degree of integration, easy adjustment and optimization for control law. Control software including servo control and serial communication has been developed and realized. The test results verify the correctness of the design. All results laid foundation for the next phase of research.
