A microbial fuel cell(MFC) is among of fuel cell.The microbial fuel cell is a device that use bacteria as the catalysts to oxidize organic matter and generate current,which has the advantages of abundant fuel resource,mild reaction condition and high efficiency.A two-chamber microbial fuel cells was constructed by using foamed metal as anode,graphite plate as cathode,by using potassium permanganate,potassium ferricyanide,potassium dichromate as cathodic electron acceptors.The results demonstrated that the maximum open circuit voltage and maximum power density of MFC could reachl.68V and 8657mW/m~3,the internal resistance of the cell is 232Ω,when permanganate concentration was 500mg/L and pH=2.0.Meanwhile, coulombic efficiency was 46.2%.When potassium ferricyanide and potassium dichromate concentration were both at 10000mg/L,the maximum power density could reach 4061 mW/m~3 and 5281 mW/m~3.The use of potassium permanganate as the cathodic electron acceptor in microbial fuel cell can improve power output.Three direct-air cathode single-chamber microbial fuel cells were constructed by using air electrode as cathode,foamed metal as anode and glucose as the anode fed.Meanwhile,the electrochemical performance were studied of microbial fuel cell.The results demonstrated that in MFCⅠthe open circuit voltage could reach 0.62V,the internal resistance of the cell was 33.79Ω,the maximum power density could reach 700mW/m~2(4146 mW/m~3),and the electron recovery was 20%.The discharge curve and CV tests revealed that the first discharge capacity and energy was 210mAh/L and 61mWh/L,the charge-discharge performance and stability of MFC were pretty good.In MFCⅡthe internal resistance of the cell was 19.5Ω, the maximum power density could reach 490mW/m~2(3490mW/m~3)The discharge curve and CV tests revealed that the first discharge capacity and energy was 277mAh/L and 73mWh/L..In MFCⅢthe internal resistance of the cell was 3.89Ω,the maximum power density could reach 775mW/m~2(21458mW/m~3) The discharge curve and CV tests revealed that the first discharge capacity and energy was 220mAh/L and 106mWh/L.The electrochemical performance of MFC is higher than other two types, Simultaneously,In MFCⅢhad low internal resistance,high power density and large discharge/charge ability.
