High fill and deep cut are inevitable for railway and highway embankment in loess medium lower mountainous regions, due to some factors be restricted, for instance terrain, railway limit slope, curve radius etc. Especially, cutting high slope problem is most outstanding. The study on the stability and selection of strengthening scheme of loess cutting high slope is a first problem in costruction of railway embankment in the loess area.Firstly,the paper discussed the engineering properties of loess, the failure ways and failure modes of loess slope, and summarized the analysis methods of the slope stability and strengthening protection technology. The common methods of the slope stability analysis include limit equilibrium method, finite element method, etc. Secondly,vertical joints of loess slope seldom considered in limit equilibrium method. This paper utilized the joints material model of ABAQUS finite element software considering vertical joints of loess slope in the FEM analysis computation, and we analysised loess slope stability, and the analysis process is more authentic. Thirdly, new structural styles have widely adopted in slope strengthening, such as: prestressed anchor cable pile-slab wall , prestressed anchor cable frame, etc. While the application design of these structural styles to loess slope is imperfect as a result of the special engineering properties. Based on practical engineering the paper makes some beneficial exploration for the application design. The analysis results demonstrated that the new strengthening protection technologyes, for instance prestressed anchored cables pile-slab wall and prestressed anchored cables frame, have good applicability. The study provides new method of the design of strengthening protection of deep cutting slope in the loess region.In the study, the stability status of the loess nature slope and artificial slope along the building railway has deeply investigated, and collected a great number of physical mechanics data on loess. This paper compares the analysis results of usual methods and finite element method on strengthening plan railway complex loess slope, and proposes the reasonable design plan to loess cutting slope.
