Dynamic compaction is a technology of foundation treatment which is applied first by French L. Menard at the end of the sixties of last century. Compared with other foundation treatment, dynamic compaction has the special advantages such as the simple equipments, convenient construction, economic cost, wide applicability, effective results and so on.Contrasted with the continuous promotion of engineering applications, however, theoretical studies of dynamic compaction still lagged. The mechanism of dynamic consolidation is divergent and indoor simulation study of dynamic compaction is rarely carried out. Owing to the lack of theoretical studies, the trial tamping has to be carried out for the purpose of dynamic compaction design.The article first discusses the different mechanisms of dynamic consolidation on the conditions of the different types of soil, discusses the relationship and difference between dynamic consolidation theory and vibration wave compaction theory. And has a qualitative understanding to mechanism of dynamic strengthening foundation.Based on the qualitative understanding to mechanism of dynamic strengthening foundation, the article establishes physical experiment model, simulates the four-level dynamic consolidation processes of 500kN?m, 1000kN?m, 1500kN?m and 2000kN?m. And gets the velocity, density, moisture content and dry density of test soil the depth direction's changes under the conditions of different tamping times.Through the analysis of the test data, we find the phenomenon of surface loosening layer, get the relations and changes between the best Tamping times and the effective reinforcement depth and between the physical parameters and velocity, and have a quantitative understanding to mechanism of test soil sample's dynamic strengthening foundation.Using physical experiment model to carry out simulation test, we not only got a lot of useful data, but also reduced costs significantly. It has a great importance in the studies of the mechanism of dynamic consolidation foundation. In the future we can plan to carry out simulation test studies to different types of soil samples. To look forward to get a standardized and systematic conclusion, so we can have a better guidance to the actual construction.
