Multi-beam sounding system from the single-frequency sounding system developed, it is a high-efficiency, high precision and high-resolution underwater topographic survey of new technologies. It not only makes sounding technology from the original point, the line extend to face, but also uses collected data mapping drawing DEM, so that the underwater topographic survey technology is to a new level. Many multi-beam sounding systems have been imported to China in recent years for applications in the fields of: underwater topographic mapping of rivers, lakes and seas;measurement of channels, harbors, piers and bridge sites;search of wrecks or other objects on the bottom;and etc. It is expected that multi-beam sounding system will certainly play greater and greater roles in the basic economic constructions of China.The paper briefly reviews the history of multi-beam sounding system's development and with Atlas Fansweep20 multi-beam sounding systems as a sample, dissertates to the measuring principle of multi-beam system and combination of the set of equipment. Equipment installation, calibration and data processing is also described, and the paper provides the complete operation from system setup to the application of final results, covering field works and indoor processes. Figures, tables and real examples help to illustrate this modern, advanced and practical technology. Finally, the paper summarizes the multi-beam system's progresses and applications.
