Road safety situation is grim increasingly in the light of recent developments in highway traffic. Highway traffic accident is on the rise in our country in recent years. Ministry of communications is organizing and implementing a highway safety enhancement project to the theme of"remove hidden danger, cherish life"since the start of 2004.As an important hub connecting eastern and central regions and the northwest, Gansu province occupies an important position road transport network in our country. So far, national highway and provincial highway account for one fourth of total mileage, the situation of traffic accident on arterial highway is serious. The main difficulties and problems is traffic safety facilities setting unreasonable such as truck escape ramp, road signs and road traffic marking. For the problems in the implementation of highway safety enhancement project in Gansu province, in this paper, the basis of accident investigation and cause Analysis, from problems in the use of truck escape ramp, research on the design method of the choice of location, angle, length and slope; put forward a method base on operating speed on the set up of traffic signs, and advanced reasonable proposals for several kinds of traffic signs; then, response to the problem of accident-prone on long downhill, tunnel entrance and intensive village section that vehicles traveling too fast on arterial highway in Gansu province, put forward a method to reduce the speed by optical illusion marking. Look forward to improve the design and application situation of highway safety enhancement project, provide a good security for vehicles and the masses.
