Dam-break is a low probability, high hazard society disaster. The dam break floods are extremely complex, and are influenced by many kinds of factors. In earlier period, the dam-break floods are researched by experiments. With the development of the calculation technique and the advance of the numerical method, even more workers simulate the problem of dam break with number calculation. The superiority of numerical simulation has been get more and more reflected. For that reason, the numerical simulation is the main research approach for dam-break floods nowadays. With the studies of mathematical model of the dam-break, it can further promote realizing of the mechanism of dam-break, analysis of dam safety, knowing the damage extent of dam-break flood, which is beneficial to formulating flood prevention decision, controlling and decreasing the disaster losses. Thereby the study of the dam-break mathematical model has important significance in the theory and application.The space-time conservation element and solution element method (CE/SE) is a new mathematical method which is originally proposed by S. C. Chang. It has many advantages such as simple, robust, high efficiency, and high accuracy. Mathematically, the dam-break flood is commonly described by the shallow water equations. The shallow water equations are discretized by the Zhang's modified CE/SE method in this paper. And the one-dimension numerical model is constructed. The codes of the numerical model are written by author with FORTRAN90 to implement function.The main content of this paper includes the following items:â‘ The dam-break model that has been established in this paper will be used to simulate the dam-break flood wave at various depth ratios under ideal conditions. And the results are compared with the Stoker's analytic solution.â‘¡With further consideration of the influence of the channel slope and riverbed friction, the flood of sudden dam-break is simulated. The calculation results are verified with WES experimental data.â‘¢The mathematical model will be applied in the practical project for the prediction of flood routing process after the dam is collapsed. And the calculation results can provide scientific basis for the disaster analysis of dam-break flood.
