Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is an important device to improve the active safety of vehicle. With the development of automotive today, its significance has been regarding more than ever. Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is braking-system closed–loop control device which prevent wheel lock when braking and, as a result, retain the vehicle's steerability and stability. The main components of ABS including: hydraulic modulator, wheel speed sensor, and ECU which used to processing signal and controlling actuators.Firstly, the paper introduces the history and basic function of the anti-lock braking system and the whole structure and control principle of system also been mentioned. According to MATLAB/Simulink, the components'models have been established, which including: single wheel dynamic model, semi-car braking model, seven free-degree whole car model, actuator model.Secondly, establish the SMC model of ABS after analyzing control algorithms. Moreover, Compare the SMC control effect with traditional logical control effect. The simulation result clearly shoes the better effectiveness of SMC applied. Based on the varied wheel acceleration on the different road surface when applied same braking force, an algorithm for identifying road surface has been invented. The simulation result shows the braking distance has been shorten apparently after applied the road identification.The drive circuit of electromagnet valve and pump motor, the circuit for processing wheel speed signal, and the diagnostic circuit are designed based on ARM series single chip LPC2292. The design idea and method of every software module in ABS is set forth.Finally, the original ECU has been substituted by self–development ECU, and the road test carried out. The test result indicates that the effect of self-development ECU, and each test target is approach to the national standard.
