Because of transmission line's large-span and the natural environment where it comes by is very complex and coupled with the impact of man-made damage. So the fault rate of transmission line is higher. Detecting and classifying fault in time and locating fault accurately have the prominent economic and social benefits. Therefore, for a long time, fault classification and location technology of transmission line have been extensive attention.The happening of faults of transmission line causes voltage or current signal having nonlinear characteristics because of time's uncertainty, busbar connection's uncertainty. In this paper, based on the double terminal method of traveling wave, the correlation dimension analysis method is applied to fault classification and location of overhead transmission line.First of all, we analyze the overhead transmission line on a normal occurrence in different locations and different fault traveling wave voltage signal calculation of correlation dimension. In the calculation process, using auto-correlation function and trial-and-error method respectively to determine when the reconstructed phase space of the delay time and the embedding dimension which makes the correlation dimension of under different circumstances of voltage traveling-wave signal has become stable. In determining the delay time and embedding dimension, the various types of normal and fault lines of the correlation dimension of a comparative analysis has been used for fault detection threshold of the correlation dimension, in order to further determine whether the ground fault, the introduction of ground evaluation index, the eventual realization of the high voltage transmission line fault on the initial classification.Secondly, based on the double terminal of traveling wave law principle, the use of correlation dimension analysis conducted on the transmission line fault location. Using the aforementioned method in fault detection, the variable step size based on the correlation dimension algorithm mutation moment, to capture the time of traveling wave fault line reached the moment of disease at both terminals of the time difference calculation, and finally using double terminal location method of traveling wave to locate the fault. Then cimbined fault classification and fault location algorithm to achieve fault diagnosis about high voltage transmission line.Finally, in order to verify the feasibility of the method all methods of the paper proposed are applied to the actual transmission line. The simulation results meet the requirement of the fault location of power system, and the reliability and effectiveness of the method is verified.
