Reactive compensation and reactive balance could improve the stabilization of the transmission system, increase the transmission ability, and restrain the over-voltage of the system. Along with the more and more complex network structure and the higher and higher voltage grade, it is far from the adequacy to only depend on the automatic booster to adjust the voltage and reactive power and it is necessary for the network itself to improve the adjust and control ability. At present, one of the most abroad used reactive power compensation devices in the power system is the shunted reactor. The existing extra-high voltage shunted reactor is not controllable, and it is accessed to the transmission line all along and can't be removed. When the fault removing and reclosing happen in the line, it will bring about power frequency and operation over-voltage. How to make the shunted reactor to be controllable is the realistic request and the developing trend, and in order to adapt for the rapid change of the load, the reactor should have the function of high speed respond.This paper introduces the research evolvement of the controllable reactor in and abroad and the detailed classifications. The basic theories of Magnetic Valve Controllable Reactor are analyzed. From the basic state equations, the equal circuit equations and physical model are got. From simulation model in Matlab, the working characters of controllable reactor are analyzed. The results have proved true and effective from comparing the simulation results with actual measured parameters.Based on the simulation model, the methods of harmonic suppression and high speed respond in Magnetic Valve Controllable Reactor are debated. The effective method of restraining the harmonics of the controllable reactor by using phase-shifting winding can eliminate the wanted harmonics without having effect on the fundamental component. The method of boosting the respond speed by capacitance discharging is presented. Based on this method, the problem of the nonlinear inductance in control loop is analyzed and the reasonable oscillating period is proposed.At last, the paper analyses the small current neutral grounding system and the special feature of the single-phase grounding faults. An integrated system of Magnetic Valve Arc Extinguishing Coil is presented. From discussing the working principle and character of Magnetic Valve Arc Extinguishing Coil, the control strategies and hardware design are given.
