With the technique of vehicle design developed constantly, more demand have been advanced to vehicle driving performance, and more perfect steering stability, smoothness and braking performance are asked to vehicle. As damper of vehicle suspension system, damper has important effect to smoothness of vehicle.ER damper is a semi-active damper. It make use of character of ER fluid after yielding, which is controllability of yield stress. Comparing to traditional damper, ER damper has many advantages, such as: simple structure, convenient control and saving energy. So ER damper is the best choice of substituting traditional damper.Taking three-cylinder ER damper and gas-filled ER damper as researchful objects, their respective formulae of damping force have been analyzed and discussed, the structural parameters have been introduced for calculating, and the conclusion has been achieved, that is, the damping force of gas-filled ER damper is better that it of three-cylinder ER damper. On the base of it, the formulae of damping have been discussed ulteriorly in gas-filled damper, and the conclusion has been achieved, that is, compressing damping force and rebound damping force are made up of three parts, which are background damping force, electric damping force and pressure of gas.By the formulae of damping force in gas-filled ER damper, the rules that the factors such as the electric intensity, ER fluid, the structure of ER damper and the movement of piston affect the damping force of ER damper have been analyzed and discussed, and they have instructional meanings to the design and optimizing structural parameters.
