Highway expansion project will be a very important question that our country's highway construction are facing and must be solved in the beginning of this century. The whole embankment stability and differential settlement is becoming more prominent. And in-depth study of Widened Embankment Deformation and Stability has universal and reality significance in the road extension project. This article relies on Tong-San highway projects. Using typical cross-sections survey geological and analyze differences of the physical properties. And using typical cross-sections monitor the settlement and lateral displacement. Survey results and monitoring results with the finite element calculation results are basically the same. On this basis, the use of finite element model simulation analysis the deformation behavior and the interaction mechanism of the old and the new road embankment under the influence such factors as different way of widening, embankment height, the new embankment material parameters, the application of geogrid. Geogrid shallow soil on the lateral constraint is obvious(within 4m depth below ground surface). Reinforced embankment can be appropriate to increase the speed of the filling. Geogrid have little bearing on surface subsidence of the foundation. In this paper, examples of comparison works limit equilibrium method determine that the strength reduction FEM is feasible. Applications of strength reduction FEM analysis factors (such as Embankment height, the new embankment material parameters, the form of the embankment slope, foundation parameters, geogrid) impacting the stability of widened embankment. And proposes the reasonable to increase the stability of widened embankment project technical measures. In this paper, the research methods and conclusions has reference value of other scholars in this field of research. Research results have great significance to improve the quality of the project of widened embankment.
