Modern society requires the speed and the efficiency, which is closely linked to the automobiles. With autos bringing convenience, meanwhile many cities is facing environmental deterioration, excessive sprawling, energy crisis and other issues. Since the 1950s, many countries around the world seek a transport system which is more convenient and faster but also environmentally protected. In this system, the walking system is a very important one. But the walking plan for the whole city is a huge project, which can not be accomplished overnight. As the places where most intensive socio-economic activities, highest land value and the highest level of development took place, the city centre attracts the most traffic-intensive complex travel, and the walking has always been a considerable proportion of it. Therefore, the walking plan for the city center areas helps to alleviate traffic, improve environmental quality, strengthen social vitality progressively in the future.This paper took the walking in the city central area in China as the object, researched how to plan it, made a general rule of planning strategies to guide the walking plans for various city centers. First of all, the paper discussed the background of the walking plans for the cities; described the theory and practice on the walking plans domestically and abroad; analyzed the relevant factors which influenced the walking plan; made a general rule of the planning strategies to guide the walking plans; under the survey in the central area of Wuhan Guanggu, analyzed the current walking patterns and problems, made the planning strategy of the central area of the Guanggu in the hope of improving the city central area of walking quality, traffic situation and the urban environment, so as to provide a valuable reference to the walking plan for the whole city.
