The perpendicular coordinate measuring machines (CMM) has developed for nearly 40 years, which has reached a high technical level on design, manufacture, calibration, testing, error correction, automation, intelligent and so on. However, with the development of the industrial modernization, the limitations of traditional perpendicular CMM also increasingly exposed to us,which can not meet the requirements of modern production. Articulated Coordinate Measuring Machine(ACMM)proposed in this thesis is a kind of non-orthogonal CMM connected by double joints, and the ACMM has the advantages of the simpleness of structure, large measuring range, little volume, not heavy, easy to operate, portable, and can be used online. Baced on the advantages above-mentioned, non-orthogonal CMM will have a broad application prospect.A whole research & analysis on the ACMM and the overall mechanical structure were introduced in this thesis. Double sleeves were adopted as the knuckle bushing, to ensure the perpendicularity of the two axises and the inner counterbalance system was designed. Then the design of each part, the choosing of the key components of the ACMM were givenMeasuring equation based on Denavit-Hartenberg method and the linear measuring errors model were discussed, and the parameter calibration model was set up based on space distance. Which is more effective in practice compared to single point calibration model.Adopting self-manufactured high accuracy calibration instrument made of qurtze which has profeat of good thermal stability, the ACMM is calibrated in high accuracy. The calibration results show that the proposed ACMM meets the expected accuracy.The main specifications of the proposed ACMM are measuring range of 1.8 meters, the accuracy of space measuring distance of±0.08mm, and the gross weight of 5kg.
