It is of great significance to make on-line fault diagnosis and monitoring on the power cable. Off-line fault location for power cable and on-line fault location for overhead transmission line have been accomplished in the past several decades. In this paper, normal fault location methods and new technologies are analyzed and compared systematically.This paper first focuses on power cable with XLPE insulation. First of all, this paper get analyses and statistic on the reasons and location of power cable faults, and set forth appropriate to keep away measure. Secondly, all the power cable insulation diagnosis technology in detail and compared with a ground wire to the signal characteristics of current-line insulation monitoring methods. Then, establish a simulation model of power cable partial defect breakdown by the aging process until all the electrical relationship between the parameters of detailed analysis. Finally, to complete the design of the system hardware and software, which is based on the ARM hardware platform design, this design has been proven to apply to UHF Power Transformer Partial Discharge On-line monitoring systems, software design including on-site monitoring procedures and the background unit computer control procedures. Through a combination of hardware and software to complete the monitoring unit of the overall structure, and computer background to carry out effective data communications, data collected for statistical signal processing, power cable insulation aging derived information to the framework of an automatic monitoring and diagnosing system.This paper insulated power cable partial simulation of defects and on-line monitoring system software and hardware realization of a current signal grounding line insulation diagnostic methods, and simulation results based on the cable insulation to breakdown by the aging process and achieve a online monitoring and diagnosis system. The use of better diagnostic techniques of power cables for power system security, quick and convenient to exclude cable fault provide a favorable environment for the theoretical basis and practical experience.
