The applications of power cable in the power supplies are getting increased and the reliability of the supplied power quality is becoming an important concern of power providers and consumers. Thus the reliability of power cable is one of the most important factors which guarantee the reliable power supply.Then how to realize the online monitoring and repairing of power cable? One of the important premises is the real-time checking of power cable. This work tries to start at the aspect of realizing the online monitoring of power cable insulation, by analyzing the grounded cable current change to find out the potential problems of power cables in order to fix the problems on time and guarantee the stable and safe operation of power cables.This work reviews the current status of power cable online monitoring and proposes a method to monitor the insulation properties of power cable by analyzing the grounded power cable current change. The application of the proposed method is discussed.This work put emphasis on the practical application of online monitoring of power cable insulation and gives a comprehensive structure of power cable insulation. Since the data acquisition system is not an emphasis of this research, a brief description is given. Then this paper discuss the mathematical methods used in the signal preprocessing part of this system, which include LPF design in analog signal processing and smoothing and filtering in digital signal processing. All of these methods are the methodology basis of the future software development. As for the software development, this work mainly discusses the communication program between data acquisition device and output device and the software of output device insulation online monitoring. The software is especially developed for the individual online monitoring system, however on the basis of this software; it can be applied to realize the internet information issuance of power cable insulation through further development.
