With the rapid development of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), a series of environment problems are generated, one of main reasons of which is the corona discharge. Several methods to calculate the conductor surface electric field are compared, and the charge simulation method (CSM) is testified to be a simple and valid method. Based on the program of CSM, many factors to influence the conductor surface electric field are analyzed. The corona inception voltage and inception electric field are predicted on the basis of a new onset voltage criterion. Compared with the classical formulas, the validity of the new method is testified. At the same time, the effects of the line parameter, air condition and height above sea level on the corona inception voltage and electric field are also analyzed. Besides, the roughness coefficient of the conductors made up with strand wires are also calculated. The results can provide some guides for the engineering design and construction.
