Regional planning is the traditional work and important study of geography, as well as the groundwork for establishing and implementing regional socioeconomic development strategy. Zoning play an active role in many aspects, including rational development and utilization of resources, protection of entironment, improvement of production and living environment, raising of people's living standard and life quality, ability to regional sustainable development and enhancement of competitiveness. In recent years, with the deterioration of global ecological environment and depletion of natural resources, regional strategic planning have gradually become the attention focus of the entire society. The formulation and implementation of regional development strategy has been an important component of overall strategy for national development, which play an significant role in advancing the construction of modernization. According to carrying capacity of resources and environment, existing development density and potential, considering population distribution, economic layout, land use and urbanization patterns of China in the future, the state "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" put forward that land space should be divided into four types of main functional areas, optimization-development zones, key development zones, restricted development zones and prohibited development zones. And then, in the light of orientation of main function, adjust and improve regional policy and performance evaluation, standardize the order of space development, form a rational structure of space development. With the emergence of various types of global environment problems, human being are increasingly realize the importance of entironment in global development. As a vital index for zoning main functional area, the evaluation of ecological importance is of great significance in sustainable development of regional entironment.Based on the major function oriented zoning, using the evaluation approach clarified in country's "Technical Specification For Provincial The Major Function Oriented Zoning", aswell as evaluation unit------the composition of ecosystem types and its quantitative servicesand values in a certain scope of land, to determine the importance of ecosystem. To reflect regional sustainable development in the view of importance of ecosystem, 83 evaluation units in Gansu province were studied and the results as follows:First, in Gansu province, the spatial repeatability is small among 5 kinds of importance of ecosystem, which means the same unit hardly has a wide range of importance of ecosystem. The hierarchy combination of ecological importance among evaluation units is very complicated, and there are 60 kinds of combination among 83 units, which fully demonstrated spatial difference of ecosystem services in Gansu, and it is closely related to the transitional characteristics of geography in Gansu province.Second, the distribution of general ecological importance in Gansu province has good regularity. The units with high importance distributed in the south of Gansu, where have good combination of hydro-thermal conditions, high degree of vegetation cover, and great service value of forest-based ecosystem; There are 13 units with relatively high importance, located close to the south, where have vast area of forest and relatively great service value; 40 units with medium-importance, where have few forest, more grassland and samll desert area, medium vegetation coverage and a certain degree of ecological function; 23 units with relatively low importance, where have few forest and grassland,but large desert area, vulnerable ecosystem and lowservice value; 2 units with low importance, ecosystem is composed of desert, farmland and city, with sparse vegetation and limited function.Third, per unit value of 6 types of ecosystem service are with great difference, followed by wetland, forest, grassland,farmland,desert and city. There are high correlation between service value of per unit and type of ecosystem. The area of wetland is small in most region of Gansu, so ecosystem service value of per unit is mainly depend on forest area share of total land area, followed by the area of grassland and farmland.Fourth, although 7 kinds of ecosystem service in every unit is different, the trends of spatial distribution are the same. Value of per unit is declined from southeast to northwest, which is in conformity with the trends of vegetation coverage and distribution of precipitation, and the overall value of ecosystem service has evident spatial pattern. The results provide fundamental basis for provincial main function zoning. It is worth exploring in improving main function zoning as a kind of ieda and method.Fifth, suggestions for ecological protection and managementin Gansu province are as follows. Taking main function zoning as policy tool, know the functional orientation of different regions; Improving eco-compensation policy, enhance the management of natural reserve; Taking ecological management as one of the key point of implementation of the western development strategy; Pay attention to water protection and saving, and set aside necessary ecological water; Adjust land use structure; Actively develop rural energy and protect natural vegetation; Adhere to classify guidance and highlight the keystone.
