The linear power generation system based on the Stirling cycle has many advantages such as high efficiency, long life, high reliability as well as applicable to wide rang of energy. In many applications the system has the potential to replace the traditional power generation systems and has a wide range of applications, especially in the deep space exploration and military purposes. In this dissertation, the concept design of the free piston Stirling engine is an attempt on the large vehicle waste heat recovery.A linear power generation system based on the Stirling cycle is discussed, which mainly consists of the free piston Stirling engine and the permanent magnet linear generator. Parts dimensions of the single cylinder free piston Stirling engine are determined, the Stirling engine performances with the isothermal analysis method analyzed and the Stirling engine cooler compression p-v diagram, heater expansion p-v diagram and the p-v diagram of the engine obtained using subtracting cooler p-v diagram from heater p-v diagram. So the free piston Stirling engine power and efficiency are calculated.Besides using the finite element method the static magnet field caused by the stator winding current is analyzed and the flux linkage through the winding is also calculated. So the stator winding induction is worked out. The running state with and without the load of permanent linear generator is simulated dynamically by the field-circuit coupling method and the permanent linear generator magnet field and voltage without load, the terminal current and voltage with load are obtained. Also the largest power of permanent linear generator is determined when it has optimal load. Meanwhile opposite electromagnetic force to free piston caused by the winding current is calculated. This is an interdisciplinary research between electric technology and thermodynamic, and the above results provide the reference for design of both the permanent magnet linear generator and the free piston Stirling engine.
