With the rapid development of optical communication technology, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology has attracted more and more attentions. Multiplexers (MUX) and demultiplexers (DEMUX) are key devices in DWDM systems. In a large number of MUX/DEMUX filters, dielectric thin film optical filters are the most reliable ones and have been widely used in commercial DWDM systems due to their excellent temperature stability, low polarization dependent loss, high channel isolation and mature technology, etc..In this thesis, the optical properties of the multi-stage narrow-band thin film filters have been theoretically and numerically studied using transfer matrix method. Based on the numerical program compiled with MATLAB, a five-stage Fabry-Perot narrow-band filter was designed and both its amplitude and phase characteristics were analyzed in details. The major works include:(1) A detailed theoretical model for thin-film optics are elaborated based on the basic theory of electromagnetic fields and transfer matrix theory, and the optical properties of multi-layer thin-films were analyzed.(2) The optical properties of Fabry-Perot interferometer were theoretically studied using transfer matrix method. Based on which, the effects of various structure parameters of the Fabry-Perot thin film filters on its spectral characteristics is analyzed systematically.(3) The effects of the interference level of the spacing layer, the layer number of the film stacks, and the refractive index ratio between the adjacent layers on the bandwidth of the Fabry-Perot filter are studied.(4) The spectral characteristics of the multi-stage Fabry-Perot filters were numerically analyzed in details. and are curbed. Based on which, a five-stage Fabry-Perot narrow-band filter were designed with negligible ripple effects within the pass-band.
