Establishing the mathematical model of lunar surface terrain provide the basis for developing lunar detectors and rovers, and it is also an important inputting and restricting term for lunar landing spacecrafts and scientific instruments. According to the terrain model of lunar surface delivered overseas, a Digital Element Model is built to describe and denote the lunar terrain numerically, and emulated landform data of smooth mare regions on lunar surface is created. The data will be help for generic mission.The main contents of this paper are as follows:1.Researches are made deeply on the theory of DEM surface modeling to select modeling and simulating methods which are the best conformable for engineering application. The paper introduced the basic theory of digital element surface modeling generally, described the processes and methods of DEM, and discussed the grid types and interpolating methods. Considering the effects of practical engineering application, we should choose the modeling methods which have relatively simple data construction and high operating efficiency, and combine the DEM method based on TIN with a certain extent. The contrastive studies of application will be made in the lunar surface DEM detail.2.After wider researches, analysis and contrast of lunar surface terrain data are made to sum up the characteristic of lunar surface terrain as the basis of modeling and simulating lunar surface terrain. After analyzing the lunar surface terrain, we can abstract the basic elements that represent the lunar surface terrain——gradient, craters and blocks(stones, ridges and so on) so as to supply guidance for lunar surface DEM and simulation.3.To establish the mathematical model of typical terrain on lunar surface according to the traits of lunar terrain. Based on analysis of modeling theory and typical lunar surface terrain we constructed the mathematical models of craters and blocks,and established foundation for finishing lunar DEM .4.To design and realize the building of lunar surface DEM data based on theoretical study. The design and realization of lunar surface modeling system are finished and tested combined with dynamics simulating models. The testing results indicate that the data created by the simulating system are correct. The system can sustain the dynamics simulating software for soft-landing detecting to test and analyze, and the system has good engineering practicability.
