High-Speed and Heavy Railway has become a priority development direction about the "Outline" of China's "Eleventh Five-Year Plan". Because High-Speed and Heavy Railway have the characteristics of high-speed , high traffic density, large power and traction current, and also the rail leakage resistance, the rail potential increases drastically which seriously hazard to the safety of human and machine. Therefore, must take appropriate technical measures to reduce the rail potential and resolve related issues.Firstly analyzes the formation mechanism of Traction current and rail potential which also analyzed qualitatively on its distribution. Then the domestic and oversea research of traction current and rail potential is introduced. But the total distribution regularity and characteristics of rail current and voltage still unclear. The study of integrated grounding wire focuses on Engineering, and their discussion mainly on the necessity, feasibility and engineering realization forms, etc. But the theory study on the choice of integrated grounding wire sectional area and its function is only a few.Secondly, deduced the total regularity of rail potential and current by formula, and discussed the impacts of induced current, power supply model and return lines for rail potential. Finally, according to the characteristics of traction power supply system, established the traction network model that under the AT power supply model by Matlab, as well as rail model with integrated earth lines.Through simulation, under different ground schemes, researched the total distribution regularity and characteristics of rail and protective wires potential. And also proposed other effective measures to reduce the potential. Among them, has a comprehensive theory analysis about how to choose an integrated earth wire sectional area, and do an actual calculation with the data of suiyu line.
