With the rising environmental consciousness and the reality of energy scarcity in recent years, LED light source, as a new generation, is gradually replacing traditional light sources in the application of road traffic. In this paper, a study and design is made on the application of the LED light source in the road traffic, including the optical design of road lighting and the fault detection methods.This paper, based on the lighting characteristics of the LED light source and the theory of optical design, researched to the computational method and the characteristic of various reflectors in the secondary optical design, and elaborated emphatically the principle and optical simulation steps of the ray tracing in the optical simulation software Tracepro.â‘ The practical design is discussed in this paper on the optical system. It includes choosing and modeling LED light source, designing the structure of reflector and LED array and so on;â‘¡Reference to the national standards for road lighting and the actual light distribution, By readjusting the parameters of the reflector and the rotation degrees of LED array continually, the light distribution of the lighting region has been greatly improved, so as to achieve the rectangular distribution of light which the road light illumination requests.In this paper, a fault detection module for LED traffic lights is presented. The system adopts the Power Line Communication mode to collect signals and transmit data. Through the practical application in the traffic junctions, the system is reliable and real-time. This can meet the requirements for the auto-detection of the LED traffic lights. Thus the LED traffic-light can run efficiently and reliably.
