The standard establishment and production automation of Zongzi are ctitical and urgent for the sound development of Zongzi industry. Presently, some procedures in Zongzi production are automatic, but the binding producture which is critical is still manual as the complex shape of Zongzi packed traditionally and the influences of some related uncertain factors. The article introduces the design of Zongzi automatic binding mahine, including the analyis of Zongzi binding process, the conceptual design of mechanism system and the prototype development. The key techniques are analyzed and researched and the main contents are as follows:1. Through the analysis of Zongzi manual binding process, the automatic binding process is programmed based on process conceiving and decomposition. The key executive mechanisms including the Zongzi clamping mechanism, the traversing mechanism and the thread clamping mechanism are designed innovatively. And the scheme of Zongzi automatic binding mechansim system is planed.2. The conceptual design process of binding mechansim system is expressed by FBS(function-behavior-structure) model based on the multi-dependency network. The structure of function, behavior and product is established. The network model is founded to assist the computer aided coordinate design of the mechansim system.3. The motion cycle and follower motion programme of the traversing cam mechanism with complex follower motion is designed based on the network model for coordinate design. And the key parameters of the traversing cam mechanism are obtained through optimization using GA(genetic algorithm). Lastly, kinematic and dynamic simulation are conducted. 5. The physical prototype of the Zongzi automatic binding machine is developed based on the establishment of virtual prototype and the design of control system. Function and performance tests are done for the machine and the traversing cam mechanism.The prototype test results indicate that the traversing cam mechanism realizes the expected motion programme well and has good kinematic and dynamic performance. The Zongzi automatic binding machine meets the expected function requirements completely, increases the productivity and decreases the intensity of labor dramatically. The success of prototype development is significant to the automatic production of Zongzi.
