Recent years have witnessed a rapid development of Electrified railway. It attracted great attention because of the characteristic of high-speed, over-loading, energy-saving, environmental protection and so on. On the other hand, electric locomotive is a high-power rectifier load which uses single phase power supply and has an impact on power system due to low power factor, a large amount of harmonic and negative sequence current. This paper studied the SVG compensation effect on power quality caused by electrified railway.The SS9 Electric locomotive is taken example to analyze the working principle of the Electric locomotive. Mathematical model of the SS9 Electric locomotive is established and the simulation analysis is performed in the normal traction state and with considering the state-switched.To evaluate the SVG compensation effect on power quality caused by electrified railway, a synthetic evaluation method based on improved AHP and probability statistic is presented. After a detailed introduction to the working principle of SVG, the SVG compensation effect is analyzed from two aspects with the data measured in the Nanxian traction substation. The first is the compensation effect on each power quality index, the second is the synthetic compensation effect. An improved compensation scheme is also given in this paper.
