Electrified railway has great traction power, high energy efficiency and smallpollution to the environment, so it has good development prospects. With theincreasing of electrified railway operating mileage and the improving of train speed,power quality problems in electrified railway must be solved. Compared withtraditional reactive power compensation device, Static Var Generator (SVG) hasobvious advantages.This paper starts from the operating principle of the SVG, according to the needsof the reactive power compensation in electrified railway, studies the key technologyof the SVG for electrified railway. First, By analysing and comparing, thesingle-phase chain multi-level structure is determined for the main circuit of the SVG,and then detailed designs of the current detection method of the SVG, and verifies itsfeasibility by simulation; Thirdly, researches on the main issues in SVG controlsystem, such as the selection and optimization of the current tracking mode, the DCcapacitor voltage control; Fourly, according to the actual situation of the electrifiedrailway power supply, the paper detaily designs the main unit parameters of the SVGand using of designed parameters simulates the reactive power compensation effect ofthe SVG on the electrified railway.
