Today is the key turning point for the construction of residence in China, which transforms from the simplex demand for quantity toward a two-folded demand for both quantity and quality. More and more emphasis is given to the improvement of the living quality for mid- and low-income families. Comfort, economics and endurance are the basic standing points for the studies on residential design. The current national regulation on the policy of residential structure turns the mainstream of residential construction toward the common commercial residence and economic applicable residence, thus how to accommodate comfort and applicability into the limited space of Medium and Small-Size Housing, and how to make them adaptive to the requirement stemming from various phases of family lifecycle, become the urgent problem in the research on residential designs.Basing on investigation, this thesis studies reasonable configuration of residential space, and the transformation from static design thinking to dynamic design approaches. Firstly, according to the residential demand, the study fictionalizes its requirement and studies the residential function of different phases of family lifecycle respectively; Secondly, it studies the design methodology: applying multi-functional space to the requirement which is continuous changing, in order to fulfill the change of residential demand with the dynamic spatial reorganization. It aims to meet the needs of different phases of family lifecycle, to study and optimize the methods in the design of Medium and Small-Size Housing for design practice in the future. Finally, it applies the design methods for the Adaptability of Medium and Small-Size Housing Design mentioned above in two cases:"Full-Functional Housing"and"Technology Integration Housing"to test their suitability and applicability.
