The speed of train had been accelerated for 6 times from 1997 to 2007 in our country. After 6 times speed acceleration, the max speed of trains has been reached 250 km/h. At the same time, the high speed railway is being built whose maximum speed can reach 400 km/h. After the speed acceleration of train, the main problems of existed railway bridges focus on the lack of transverse rigidity of the bridge. Bridges'transverse vibration amplitude which is too large has a direct impact on the safety of train and bridges. So the phenomenon that the transverse vibration amplitude of bridges is too big has become an important barrier to the speed acceleration of train. So that the work that strengthening the structures to restrain the transverse vibration of railway bridges can not be ignored. In this paper, viscous damper which is one method of the energy dissipation retrofitting is adopted to reinforce the existed bridges, and the feasibility and effect of the viscous damper also have been discussed.First of all, on the basis of predecessors'theories and using the related formula the exerting load method of the numerical simulation analysis has been assured.Secondly, generalizing the predecessors'research results and theories and using SAP2000 software to simulate the process that the trains pass through the bridge, the impact of train's mass, velocity and other factors on the transverse vibration of the bridge has been researched. The worst work condition of bridge was assured from the analysis results.Next, the impact of viscous damper's location and manner on the transverse vibration of the railway bridge was simulated and illustrated and the design of viscous damper was analysis in detail. By optimizing the parameter of the damper the best damper's location and manner was adopted to restrain the transverse vibration of the bridge. So the design method can guide practical engineering about bridge transverse reinforcement.Finally, the paper summarized the above-mentioned work can indicate that adopting viscous damper to restrain the transverse vibration amplitude of railway bridge is available and the effect is better.
