There may be double-directions flow of the tide in micro-grid, the current sensed by the protective devices will be different during grid connected and micro-grid operation and this will lead to protective device mis-operation. So traditional power system current protection technology can not be directly applied to micro-grid protection. It is important for micro-grid to respond to internal faults and the grid faults, while ensuring the protection selectivity, rapidity, sensitivity and reliability, also it is a challenge. The paper focuses on micro-grid protection, proposes directional overcurrent relays of the objective function and constraints, and to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the objective function. The key issue in selecting the relay settings is to achieve the minimum possible operating times while maintaining coordination among all relays. In this paper, modified particle swarm optimization algorithm is applied to relay coordination problems, while it has made certain of the system modeling.According to the characteristics of micro-grid, we establish simplified model of micro-grid. We summarize the optimal goal of the coordination of relay protection, and take into account with the role of the fault duration out of the influence to improve power system reliability. In this paper, we show the objective function and its constraints. Mainly basic particle swarm optimization algorithm is to be modified, and to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the objective function. In order to solve the problem of micro-grid protection relay coordination, the relay coordination problem is formulated as a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming problem and is solved by Modified Particle Swarm Optimization. The calculation of the time dial setting and the pickup current setting of the relays is the core of the coordination study. The key issue in selecting the relay settings is to achieve the minimum possible operating times while maintaining coordination among all relays. The results coincide with the optimal solution through system model simulation, to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm.
