Municipal Solid Waste( MSW ) is one kind of highly compressed and non-homogeneous materials, the final settlement of waste in the landfill could reach the height of the initial 30%~40%. With China's rapid economic development and the advancement of the process of urbanization, MSW production also increased dramatically. To properly solve the problem of waste disposal, a large number of landfill projects are being implemented or planned. Study of landfill settlement will have a better chance of avoiding the waste of landfill space, while the settlement calculation results can be used to optimize the pad design and guide the design of facilities, such as drains and gas collection devices. Developing a software for landfill storage capacity and settlement computation will be of great help for engineers in their design and analysis.This paper firstly introduced the components of MSW and settlement mechanism. Simulated the waste (MSW) placement and settlement process, developed a calculation method to calculate waste settlement according to the process. The calculation method took into account the impact of water level and organic matter degradation. A computer software for predicting MSW settlement was developed based on the calculation method. Three different settlement calculation models' parameters were fitted based on part of the measured data in ShangHai Lao-gang Landfill. It was showed that this calculation method can Simulate the waste placement and settlement process well and the calculation results can be used to assist in the sloping design of the pipe.This paper gave an introduction to the development of a computer software for predicting landfill settlement and capacity throughout the landfill life. The overall structure and main features of the computer software were presented. An illustrative analysis was used to demonstrate the functions of the software.Finally, this paper calculated the settlement of ShenZhen Xia-Ping Landfill, ShangHai Lao-Gang landfill and SuZhou landfill with the computer software. These are the three typical engineering. The results showed that this three-dimensional software can easily build the terrain data of the landfill and had a good ease of use. The calculation results had good accuracy.
