With the progress of science and technology, the rapid development of society brings a lot of traffic problems, such as the increase in traffic congestion, the increase in occurrence of traffic accidents and the degradation in traffic environment. In order to resolve these problems, the research of Intelligent Transportation System has been got more and more attention, among them, the road network modeling technology is getting attention by domestic and foreign scholars as the basic in the intelligent transportation field, and being the focus of research content.Based on the problems of current traffic, through the comprehensively analyzing on the technology and development trend of existing road network modeling at home and abroad, for the situation of our lack in wide-area road network model, referring to the relevant research results, paper analyses the geographical characteristics of national road network, and extracts road network feature. Combined with semantic network and topology technologies etc, paper improves technologies and designs a road network modeling method based on the description of generalized topology. Based on effective performance of the road network topology, according to the evaluation standard, paper establishes a road network data model. Combined with related technologies of knowledge and knowledge representation in Artificial Intelligence, paper achieves the establishment of the road network knowledge base.Paper discusses the proposition, the design and the application of the road network modeling method which based on the feature and generalized topological description in detail, and establishes the road network model experimental system by using Borland C++ Builder development platform. The experiment system has the basic query capabilities, and supports the knowledge base maintenance, checkout and data manipulation etc.Finally, according to model evaluation standard, the paper analyses the road network model which based on the feature and generalized topological description, and compares with current arc - node model in description ability. The results shows that, the model is consistent with five evaluation standard basically, and improves the section of model and the path model based on arc - node model. For the model description ability, although the former is lower than the latter, but it meets the practical basic application requirements, this illustrates that the model is valid. The paper also points out the underlying inadequate and defects, as well as, and gives the emphases and direction for the future work.
