With the power facilities are being developed toward higher voltages, more and more disadvantages are found in the traditional instrument transducers based on electromagnetic induction and capacitance divider. So a novel Optical Voltage Transducer (OVT) is expected urgently in power system. In this paper, the electric-field distruibution of the sensor in this transducer is researched, and the structure of the sensor is designed and optimized, and this voltage transformer can be used for measuring voltage more than 35 kV.First of all, the basic principles of the full optical-fiber voltage transformer is introduced. The voltage transducer in this paper is designed based on the converse piezoelectric effect of quartz, it can measure the voltage through the changes of differential phase which in the dual-mode fiber. The quartz is placed between the metallic electrodes, the elliptical-core dual-mode fiber is wound onto the circumferential surface of the quartz in the sensor of this transducer. The gas is air or mixed with air and SF6. The sensor can bear 145 kV high voltage and ensure the normal measure.Secondly, the theory of insulation under the high voltage is firstly discussed summarily and the conditions and characteristics of gas along the surface flashover is elaborated, given the measures to improve the breakdown voltage. It is the rationale for designing and optimizing of the transducer probe. Then the method of analyzing the electric field of the sensor and calculating on computer are discussed, the characteristics of finite element method are discussed in the reliable foundation of mathmatics and precision. The finite element method is choosed in this paper to build the mathmatics mode and calculation is carried out on the computer.Finally, the sensor structure is designed and optimized,and its electric field is analysed by using the software ANSYS and the theory of the asymmetry electric field. The electric field's distribution charts of the sensor are plot. The better material and shape of the transducer probe are choosed. The insulating problems of the sensor are ensured.
