The pipe was distributed extremely abroad. The safe operation of pipe had a very close relationship with the life and production. It had a great important significance to ensuring the safe operation of pipe. The problems was gradually exposed in the operation of pipe, with the increase in the number of channels and the increase in running time. In order to timely identified problems and controlled accidents and reduced the losses caused by accidents, the pipe corrosion detection and leak detection was extremely important. However, as the using of ultrasonic guided wave testing of metal pipe wasn't long history in China, there was no testing procedures of guided wave and criteria of result evaluation. Therefore, it had a wery important practical significance to carry out the study of metal pipes guided wave inspection techniques and evaluation methods, to draw up technical regulation, to fill the gap, and to provide technical support for the government safety supervision work.The paper first set forth the study of history and current situation of the ultrasonic guided wave detecting at home and abroad and the basic theory of ultrasonic guided wave detecting, then did a series of experiment study. The experiments included the following aspects: 1) The experiments of different kinds of pipe notch detection; 2) The experiments of different outer coating and water-filled and underground of pipe; 3) The experiments of different radial length and circumferential length of the notch; 4) The experiments of different types of notch. The result was verified the numerical simulation, obtained some characteristics and disciplinarian of the ultrasonic guided wave detecting, settled the base for the future study and equipment research and standard framed.
