Reactive power optimization, which is guaranteed to meet the various operating constraints, and with less reactive power exhausted to improve the voltage quality and reduce loss reach a maximum, is a dynamic, multi-objective, multi-constraint, uncertainty nonlinear mixed programming problems, related to the choice of location of reactive power compensation, the determination of reactive power compensation capacity, transformer tap adjustment, and coordination of power generation machine terminal voltage and so on. In this paper, It described reactive power optimization model and method in detail, proposed general mathematical model of reactive power optimization and analyzed the existing method of reactive power optimization. It could be divided into two types of operations research methods and artificial intelligence methods.with the Combination of reactive power and voltage problems exposed in power running and controlling in this areas, it analyzed the existing reactive power compensation equipment and capacity and established a reactive power optimization model as the objective function was minimum transmission line reactive loss. Due to the control variables in reactive power optimization contained both continuous variables and discrete variables, it proposed a method that real mixed integer encoding, and then based on genetic algorithm.
