| Spreading from Arabian Peninsula, colourful Islamic Building Culture attracts worldwide attention and plays one of the most important roles in the world architectural history. The introduction of Islamism to Northwest China was also from Central Asia. With the spread and evolution of the religion, it collided and transformed with Chinese culture and developed, which made the architecture in Sinkiang have its salient regional feature especially for the core of Islamic construction-mosque. Not only being a ritual space for the religious service, but also a spiritual space for the conversion between Musclemen and Allah, it has become a dominated and regular communication space in Muslim life. However, as the symbol of architecture and culture, it performed in two different ways which are Uygur mosque and Hui mosque. By means of the massive field research on the mosques in Sinkiang and peruse studying on the relative international literatures, the author has formed her own opinion in the mosque architecture study. In addition, three mosques were picked to support the theories. Through the analysis and the comparison of the above two sorts of mosques, this paper discusses their architectural characters and religious appeal, and seeks to find how the buildings express the spirit of religion. What's more, from the view of architecture, it unscrambles how the site select, facing aspect, spatial construction system, structures, materials and decoration semantic for the mosques are related to the religion, and the interrelationship between the ritual and the buildings. Finally, for the concerns with the localization of the foreign constructions, the inspiration and prospect is stated for the modernization of religious edifices, which is to relate contemporaneous architectural context with applicable resources under the same environment and use improved traditional technologies. |
