In recent years, blackout disasters often happen at home and abroad. As backup protection cannot identify fault and overload which is caused by power flow transferring, it leads to cascading trip and power network blackout in large area.On the basis of researching network topology analysis, wide-area switch and electrical quantity information are respectively brought to do network topology tracing, under no-fault and fault circumstance, faster and more reliable than traditional method. Also chaos theory is brought in. Set reasonable parameters of power system model, it is found that chaos is exsiting in all the bus voltages waves. Calculate and compare the LE values of all bus, it is found that fault is on the line whose sides has the largest and second largest LE values, and fault is near the bus which has the largest LE value, which can be used to tracing topology when relay protection can act exactly. It is reliable used under other fault modes except two-phase short fault. The method is proved to be effective in topology tracing after fault though actual example simulating.
