The construction of urban rivers is an important way to improve the urban living environment and enhance the urban quality. But a serious shortage of water resources, the unique climate and hydro-geological conditions determine that the construction of urban rivers in northwest arid region should not take an unusual way. It must be based on geographical facts to open up a rich geographical characteristics and sustainable development road of building river in arid areas.The paper summarizes the related theories about the construction and management of urban rivers at home and abroad, analyses the impact of water resources, climate, hydrogeological conditions to the building of urban rivers in the northwest arid area. The paper analyses the experiences and lessons about the practice of building urban rivers in Xinjiang. On this basis, the paper builds a unique system of urban river design with Northwest arid regional characteristics.
