The basic structure and working principle of magnetic valve controllable reactor were studied in this paper. Also, the operating characteristics were comprehensively analyzed based on its mathematical model built by this paper. Issues related with the transient electromagnetic analysis were studied, then, direct-coupled field-circuit solution of two-dimensional nonlinear transient eddy current field methods were determined to be used to calculate magnetic field distribution under the combined effects of AC and DC. The magnetic circuit structures of magnetic valve controlled reactor were firstly studied based on finite element analysis, and 2-D field-circuit coupling models were also established. Furthermore, magnetic valve arc suppression coils were studied. The results show that:a small section of the reactor sub-treatment can effectively reduce the additional losses and precise 2-D prototype field-circuit coupling model can reflect the practical transient electromagnetic process within the reactor accurately.
