Magnetic valve controllable reactor becomes more and more wildly used in resent years, which is the important equipment in the aspects of voltage control and reactive power compensation in the power system. The paper was financed by the National Natural Science Foundation Project (50777019) 'multi-objective coordinated control of the shunt compensation to long UHV transmission line and neutral point small controllable reactor'. The theories of the magnetic valve controllable reactor were introduced and its mathematical model was built in this paper. And the basic structure and working principle were analyzed. The paper also analyzed five kinds of typical working conditions and the conversion conditions between each other. This paper simulated basic magnetic valve controllable reactor structure by the finite element analysis software ANSYS through commands flow method, and established two-dimensional finite element model, to analyze the core structure and magnetic field distribution. Further, aiming at the laboratory magnetic valve controllable reactor prototype did a finite element simulation analysis, through the small section on piecewise handle reduced the magnetic field horizontal component effectively, and reduced the reactor loss. Explained that it is feasible to analyze the reactor loss by analyzing the magnetic field structure through the finite element analysis method and draw the conclusion that the reactor loss can be reduced through the segmented magnetic valve. A 3d finite element analysis was also made on some different kinds of reactors. At last, the paper introduced the ANSYS coupling field analysis, established the 2d magnetic field-circuit coupling model of magnetic valve controllable reactor and analyzed it. Then experiments were carried out to study the volt-ampere characteristic and control characteristics for the magnetic valve controllable reactor which was customized by our laboratory. The current waveforms under different capacity conditions were analyzed. The experiments proved that the larger the capacity, the closer to sine the working current of the reactor was and the smaller its harmonic became. The experiments verify the correctness of theoretical analysis and have important significance to analyze the magnetic structure of reactor.
