The number and kinds of collapsed transmission towers, the features of damage and ice thickness are investigated to find out the reasons of the damage caused by the ice disaster in Zhejiang power grid in 2008. The result reveals that the ice damage is caused by the following reasons:the practical ice thickness exceeds the design thickness and partial load data is low in the original technical regulation. The main reason is the longitudinal unbalance tension caused by uneven ice or ice-shedding.Anti-icing countermeasures are proposed based on the analysis. The new technical regulation and new ice atlas should be used in the tower design. Some anti-icing design methods should be employed at the same time. The anti-icing ability of transmission lines can be enhanced efficiently with such measures.
