Based on the reading of the relevant references, review of the study status of seepage deformation for seawall was presented. Aimed to the limitation and shortage of the numerical simulation method of seawall seepage deformation, a numerical model for saturated-unsaturated and unsteady seepage flow analysis considering soil permeability variation with seepage deformation propagation was pointed out in this paper. Then, the effects of different effect factors on the seawall seepage deformation were analyzed. The main study contents are as follows.(1) In order to study seepage deformation propagation and seepage feature of seawall under flood infiltration, a numerical model for saturated-unsaturated and unsteady seepage flow analysis considering soil permeability variation with seepage deformation propagation was established by use of numerical simulation method, and the corresponding finite element computation program was made. Numerical simulation of flood seepage for typical section of real seawall was carried out by use of the program. The computed results are compared well to the measured results of field seepage test, which shows the presented model and program are reasonable and reliable. Based on the numerical simulation results, it can be seen that flood seepage of seawall is a saturated-unsaturated and unsteady seepage flow process and seepage deformation propagation of seawall is caused by long time flood infiltration under large seepage gradient. Therefore, upon the flood infiltration, seepage deformation of the seawall is a very complicated process, which involves saturated-unsaturated seepage and soil permeability variation with seepage deformation propagation. It is questionable to use the steady seepage analysis method to simulate seepage deformation propagation of seawall.(2) Seepage flow and seepage deformation within the seawall is affected by many factors. It is a very complex process involving saturated-unsaturated and unsteady seepage flow. In order to clarify the influences of different conditions on the seawall seepage deformation and to formulate rational and effective impervious reinforcement scenario, combined with the problems encountered in impervious reinforcement of Qiantang River seawall, saturated-unsaturated and unsteady seepage flow analysis program considering soil permeability variation with seepage deformation propagation was applied to analyze the effects of the initial phreatic line, initial water content of soil, rainfall and flood characteristics on the seawall seepage deformation.
