With continuous complication of the structure and operation methods in the power system, real-time control of power systems is increasingly needed. The model of traditional state estimation is unable to perform actively. It is necessary to study new model to meet the needs of development. With the application of PMU (Phasor Measurement Unit) in the network, WAMS(wide area measurement system)has come into service. The state estimation based on PMU is a new direction. The study status quo of state estimation at home and abroad, as well as the developments of China's electric power system is briefly described.Secondly, OPP (optimal PMU placement) problem is proposed for guaranteeing the better use of WAMS data. This paper analyzes the characteristics of different PMU placement program, and presents a new PMU placement program on the strength of the degree-of-association with node power. The new program achieves good results in setting PMU step by step, while the program also has good practicality and scalability. Finally, the classical modes and development in the basic theory of state estimation have been presented. Besides, characteristics of different model are summarized in many aspects. Based on the phase measurement techniques, hybrid measurement model is established. The hybrid model improves accuracy and stability of state estimation by the introduction of PMU measurements. Simulation results show that the state estimation model has a good prospect of engineering application.
