With the development of automobile industry and transportation, the rate of automotive replacement is accelerating. For scrap cars problem, in one side, it is a heavy burden for society and environment, in another side, it is also the previous resources with great economic value, Because that some parts can be recycled and re-manufactured, some even can be reused directly. But now we still lack of definitly rules for determining whether the service part should be recycled or re-manufactured. Among these rules, the remaining life of parts is a key one.A certain type of automobile transmission gear axis is applied as the research target. The force analysis, stiffness and strength calculation are finished. Consider- ing working condition of the transmission, The failure form of the gear axis and the gear itself are analysed systemic. All of the efforts supply key evidence for estimating the remaining life of the first gear axis. Then, the process of the fatigue life predicting of the first gear axis is introduced, which include create the first gear axis 3D model and the FEA model, extracting the work load spectrum, obtaining S-N curve of the gear axis and calculating the fatigue life with professional software MSC.Fatigue. The analysis method for predicting the remaining life of the retired gear-box is brought forward. The calculation method and model for both knowing service record or unknowing are established. The analyse mainly stress on effect of fatigue crack propagation which come from the residual stress. Moreover, the remaining life of the first gear axis with crack propagation theory is calculated.The remaining life estimation play a great role in deciding whether the part is suitable for re-creation before re-manufacture. It also has great significance in estimating the part without any repair.
