| At the age of information, architects practicing in the area of HUI are increasingly keen to obtaining inspiration from the classical HUI vernacular architecture. However, previous researches on HUI architecture are too much focused on how they look like. Consequently, most buildings designed to mimic the HUI architecture are simply a puzzled-up collection of the HUI elements, lacking the spirit and the natural beauty of this gracious architecture. This article will apply the architectural typology to investigate and analyze the'Huizhou's Characteristic Spaces'; discover essential elements of Huizhou's context through examine its geographical features and apparent structures of the classical spaces; study in the material world of Huizhou to draw the'prototype'of the'Huizhou Characteristic Space'. Findings from researches introduced above will sustain the attempt to explore the creativity in regional architecture. This thesis presents both theoretical and experimental studies. It is organized into three parts: theory, analysis, and practice. Based on the theoretical analysis and case studies, the spatial typology of the HUI spaces is established and employed in practice. This thesis provides a practical process that allows for more appropriate employment of the HUI architecture in contemporary architectural practice. |
