In recent construction, spread foundations on rock have been adopted more frequently. The design methods of spread foundation in current specifications are all from theories based on soil. Because the rock has obvious characteristics of high capacity, high rigidity and little distortion, some theoretical and practical defect are caused by application of method from current specifications to design bend-resistant capacity and shear-resistant capacity of spread foundation on rock.In this article, by methods of field test, numerical analysis and theoretical analysis, some researches have been done to the stress distribution under spread foundation on rock, failure mode, bend-resistant and shear-resistant capacity of spread foundation on rock. The main work and efforts are as follows:â‘ According to test results and test phenomenon, it summarizes the stress distribution under spread foundation on rock, form relevant tables and curves, gets the rule of distribution curve of subgrade reaction. It also checks failure mode of the foundation members, and obtains the ultimate failure load of the members.â‘¡Through the result of numerical analysis, it takes use of wide-used finite element software ANSYS to imitate different dimension foundations under various loads, attaining the stress under spread foundations and its distribution curve. It also contrast field test results with numerical analysis results, and summarizes the contrast to get valuable conclusions.â‘¢Based on summarization of field test results and conclusions of numerical analysis, theoretical analysis is done to mechanic properties of spread foundations on rock. By reference to current specifications and relevant research results, it offers new formula to calculate bend-resistant and shear-resistant capacity of spread foundations on rock.The research results about spread foundations on rock in this article, have its own value both in theoretical research and in engineering applications.
