Promoting the development and utilization of renewable energy such as surface water has become a national sustainable development demand. The Pearl River Delta region locates in the Pearl River drainage basin which is abundant in water resource. For its favorable geographical conditions, the feasibility of using surface water source heat pump(SWSHP) in the Pearl River Delta Region was analyzed.First, the working principle of the SWSHP was introduced, then, the relative merits and application range of SWSHP was analyzed and summarized, the development of the SWSHP at home and abroad was described.Taking the Haizhu Square station of Guangzhou Metro as example, the performance of water chiller using Pearl River water and circulating water of cooling tower were analyzed. The water temperature in different place along the Pearl River was compared. The results showed that: the temperature of water in the Pearl River was lower than that of circulating water of cooling tower before July when the cooling load of air conditioning system was small and the environment temperature was low. But the temperature of water in the Pearl River was higher than that of circulating water of cooling tower from July to October, especially in July and August. And considering there is much impurity in the Pearl River water, using the Pearl River water as cooling water for chiller has no obvious economic advantage. The Pearl River Delta in winter has no heating demand, but there is still hot water usage requirements, so heat pumps using the Pearl River water and air as the heat source heat pump were compared, results showed that the Pearl River water temperatures was generally higher than air and SWSHP can supply hot water better during winter. Comparing with air temperature, the Pearl River water temperature is more stable. Additionally, the Pearl River water-source heat pump would not frost, so the performance of water-source heat pump using the Pearl River water is much better than that of air source heat pump.Taking a SWSHP project in Huizhou City as example, which use the artificial lake water as cold source, quantitative calculation was took to investigate whether the amount of water in the lake was able to meet the demand for summer cooling. By analyzing the thermal exchange principle, the calculation model was built up. The results showed that even at the worst circumstance, because of large temperature different between water and air, and lake water was abundant and flowed slowly, heat can be fully discharged into environment. In addition, waterscape could spill out much heat, so considering this part of the heat, the use of lake water in summer to cool is entirely feasible. This study provides the basis for the present SWSHP applications in the Pearl River Delta region. It also provides the fundamental data material for application of SWSHP in other areas where is hot in summer and warm in winter. Thermal capacity calculation provides a certain referential value and theoretical significance for the lake water source heat pump.
